Nottingham Place vs Non-Place Photoshoot

Today I went out with a good colleague of mine to record examples of Non-places and Places in accordance with Marc Auge’s book Non-Places.  Most of the really useful areas in Nottingham I have recorded as Montages in order to capture the surrounding area in conjunction with the focus of the image.  This highlights the close proximity of Non-Place against Place which actually isn’t a surprise at all because our culture is so transport orientated.  What was clear from just walking around with my eyes open instead of just accepting what was in front of me, was the overwhelming number of examples of Non-Places.  The number of Auge defined Places was incredibly low.  This repeats loud and clear the message from the video I linked to on youtube which puts forward the idea that a city may indeed be a Non-City.  Every city has a Currys, a McDonalds, a KFC, a Tesco, a Shopping Centre, a main transport artery or two but not every city has a Castle, a history of Lace production, a hero and a vibrant history of providing excellent education at all levels.  These are the things that make a City individual.

These are the montages of the main shots.
