Guangdong Provence PRC

I’ve got hold of Project On The City which explains the development of cities in the Pearl River Delta region of China.  The book has images of communist propaganda which I really find interesting.  It also shows the way that the new building projects are sold to the people of the region.  You start to understand democracy some-what when you SEE the lack of power the people have regarding their environment in China.

This is a model of one of the cities that are being sold to people prior to being built.  I imagine trusting the builders to actually build the model in the same way is a different kettle of fish to buying off plans in this country.  Its important to realise that this space is for both industry and domestic uses.  The mix is often at close quarters.  A high rise skyscraper can have offices, industry and domestic homes in the same block.  Initial uses are generally mixed.  On page 225 there is a picture of washing hanging out of the lower area of a skyscraper which has Curtain-wall glazing.  The architects clearly haven’t planned around the intended use of these buildings.  Air Conditioning is rare and expensive in China and the effect of Curtain-wall glazing is lost once someone opens a window.  Compare this to the industry only – air conditioned buildings of the west.

I couldn’t resist to include this.  It made me laugh when I first saw it.
